hardware removal

Any body ever have a screw brake dueing hardware removal and the doctor just left it in there? i had a spinal fusion several years ago l5-s1. # years after that had hardware removal. During the initial hard ware removal one of the screws broke, on the back ends. The broken screw has since shifted and now is pinching a nerve in my back. My spinal surgeon ordered a CT scan to see the exact location, because it is possible they may have to remove it. Any body ever have a similar situation?

  • I had two screws loosen and ultimately removed and replaced with larger screws. It can occur at times, and depending on how the screw broke, determines if they need to replace or simply remove them. If your fusion is complete and solid, then they may just remove the broken screw and not have to replace it.
  • May I ask how a doctor can leave a screw loose in you and did he tell you? Also may I ask why you had removal and how you are? I felt fine after my surgery but my back has been feeling so tight, heavy and like I can feel everything, even pinching. It has been over 1 1/2 yrs. since the first scoliosis surgery, then my neck fractured (I think from the gravity of the hardware) a few months later. I can't take the pain and heaviness and would love to get some removed with the surgeon's ok. Thank you.
