harware removal

I had a 2 level fusion laminectomy facetectomy discectomy . January 29 2014.I was not getting better walking as much as I was walking.I found out through trial and error that walking on asphalt was creating the extra pain and why I wasn't getting any pain relief. I have seen my surgeon today he basically said the hardware is most of the problem. He will not do any tests until 1 year post op.Then providing I have fused we will discuss hardware removal.I have explained that is exactly what I want.I was trying to find if anyone was in a similar situation and hardware removel helped them.Honestly I wil have it done either way I just want to know I tried everything possible to get reasonably better.thanks for any input.I am just looking for anything positive I still have to wait 5 months.

  • The recovery from fusion surgery is at least a year. Removing the hardware may or may not be necessary but you won't know how you feel or what your body's recovery will be until you get to around the 12 month mark, some patients it takes even longer, 18 months or so.
There are some who have had the hardware removed, due to allergies or loosing weight and the rods being more prominent, and honestly, once the fusion is solid , there is no reason they have to stay in place, but many surgeons don't want to put patients under again for removal if it's not medically necessary.
