Swelling feet and legs post op L5/S1 interbody fusion with Pedicle screws

How common is it to have extreme swelling of the feet and ankles/lower legs after lower back surgery? What are some things I can do to alleviate? The swelling has gotten so bad that my thighs are now becoming sore to the touch. When squatting, it feels as if my skin will pop it is so tight. I had thought that perhaps my sodium intake since coming home from the hospital may have increased and I am now making a strong effort to reduce sodium. I am drinking several glasses of water per day, or I will drink non decaf ice tea using Stevia as a sweetener. My surgery was 8 days ago. I am wearing a back brace and walking fairly easily without my walker.
Another annoying affect I am experiencing is extreme itching. Everywhere. I take a 24 hour allergy pill every morning along with Benadryl 2 to 3 times a day.
I am pleased with the improvement of mobility and alleviation of pain I am experiencing. It's these other 2 affects I am not thrilled about.
Finally, about myself. I am 5'9", 230 pounds, type 1 diabetic with decent blood sugar control. I have access to a gym as soon as I get the ok to return. I always was and hope to continue, to be a fairly active person.
Any advice or suggestions, or similar experiences, would be great to hear. Thanks!
