I've posted a few odd questions here and probably some of them don't make sense.
I've had a recent disc herniation in the L5 S1 region. It was probably there for several years, but after running a hard race this weekend, my entire left leg went numb and what I assume now are typical back pain symptoms started (difficulty walking, standing, the numbness and apparently my leg is getting weaker per the MD's).
Ive dealt with sciatica all my life, but this is different.
I've seen a Neurosurgeon who did say with micro disc surgery my pain would go completely and I would only be out of work ONE WEEK? He also recommended waiting one more week because he believes it possible for me to heal this disc injury on it's own, I am less optimistic.
Today I saw a pain management person who recommended the series of 3 epidural space injections. THis appeals because apparently I can become pain free and able to walk and move about almost immediately.
My insurance does not cover the pain management guy, but I can make payments.
Can anyone attest to being out of work only one week? I have essentially a desk job, but it does require me to visit a few different areas of a large facility daily. (So I probably would walk about a mile or two a day but with ability to rest, not continuously.)
And what do you all think of trying the ESI (Steroid injections) first?
I'm very frightened as my entire joy in life really has been with running and swimming. I'm not really a person who enjoys just being still. Any advice, experience is welcome.
