Lumbar Spine injury

Hi all,
I had just received my MRI report and i need some advice on my conditions, these are the findings
-There is loss of normal lumbar lordosis. The spinal alignment is satisfactory
-There is loss of normal T2 signal in the L5/S1 intervertebral disc, associated with decrease in disc height, in keeping with disc degeneration.
-At L5/S1, there is central and paracentral disc protrusion resulting in indentation of the thecal sac and disc contact of the central left S1 nerve root.
My specialist recommend me to go for surgery, but i am not so keen on surgery. Is my condition that serious?
What are my options for treatment other than surgery?
