Neck pain with burning (rubber band snapping) sensation in right upper scapula.

I was diagnosed with disc bulges between C4/5 (the more severe one) and another one at C5/6. I was rear ended 16 months ago and have had chronic headaches, burning in my upper scapula with the sensation of someone snapping a rubber band on my upper trapezius. X-rays show some mild instability at C4. I'm very frustrated because neurologist don't see "enough of an issue" to do anything for me. I have been on all type of meds, I've done PT 2-3 weekly for a year, tried acupuncture for 6 months, nothing gives me more than 2 days relief. I'm exhausted and would love some advice. My PT and I believe my problems are two-fold. Disc bulging and instability are causing some irritation to the nerve. Since I don't have obvious spinal cord impingement, doctors don't want to operate. But seriously, after a year and a half of suffering, what's left?

  • You *really* don't want surgery if you don't need it. Also, surgery is to stop progression on the issue, not necessarily to get rid of the pain you have.
I would start off with a second and possibly third opinion, to make sure you've been diagnosed properly.
    Good luck!

  • I have been to 2 neurologists and 1 Orthopiedic doctor. I guess my frustration is that my problem isn't obvious because I have several herniated discs that Inguess in most people would be assymptomatic due to mild chord compression. But for some reason with my neck instability and life my disc and nerve is being irritated constantly, jut not impinged. I don't understand what they are waiting for. Can't you clean up the disc without major disc replacement? Or offer something other than narcotics and muscle relaxers? This chronic pain has affected my life so badly I am just desperate to get this under control so I can get back to living. I am getting a facet injection on C4 on the 24th and the neurologist will follow up after a few weeks to discuss what next step to take. I'm am grateful that I am a stubborn gal and can advocate for myself. I know this pain is not normal and I will continue to seek help as long as it takes.

I'm sorry you are going through this. I hope the injection helps you. I had herniated disc at c4/5 also. It can be very painful. I had 2 surgeries(first one didn't fuse). While the surgeon was in there, he removed a large bone spur. I've been dealing with nerve pain ever since. I really think therapy just aggravates me more? Have you talked to your doctor about getting on a nerve pain med? I'm on gabapentine & it seems to help a small amount. I just had my dosage increased. Maybe you need a referral to see a pain management doctor?
