AM I TOO LATE?!?!?!?!?

Im currently 19 years old and i have had sciatic pain running down my left leg to my foot for about an year and a half now. Due to the pressure of getting into university i never really had the time to have it properly checked out. All i had was an x ray which didn't show any thing and the GP just told me i had a pinched nerve so i didn't think much of it. Right after graduation i started having some physio done for about 3 months but that didnt do much help either. Being worried i began reading up the symptoms online and was shocked to find out that sciatica usually lasts a few weeks. As of right now i am awaiting an mri scan but here in Canada it takes months before you actually have it done due to the healthcare system. My questions are:

1. Is the damage permanent? Am i too late?
2. Has anyone else my age suffered from sciatica and how do he/she stay active?
3. I feel like surgery is my only option. Is surgery safe? is it helpful?

Thanks in advance for your replies
