Lower back pain - 14 months

I was rear-ended 14 months ago and I am still having lower back pain. I am 25 years old (male) and I was very active before my accident. I have been going to physiotherapy and chiropractic treatments three times a week since the accident. I have had a CT scan and multiple X rays done and seen a specialist a few weeks ago who thinks the pain is coming from my facet joints (L5-S1). I had the facet joint injections completed 2 weeks ago today but my right side still hurts a lot. My lower back hurts a lot when I bend forward and backwards. I have read a lot of articles on this site and think it may be my facet joints or a disk problem. I am just worried because I was hoping the facet joint injections would work and they have not as I am still having pain. I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this and what you did to over come it? or what else you think could be wrong with my back?

  • Hi. Can I ask, what kind of 'specialist' is it that you're seeing? An MRI is the way they check for disc problems. If you suspect that there could be something structurally wrong with your spine please don't allow a chiropractor to do any 'adjustments' on you. It's medically the wrong thing to do. I know people who have gone from the chiropractors office too emergency surgery because of an adjustment!!
I have severe facet joint arthritis (among other issues) & the shots didn't do much for me long term either ;-(

There's no-one who can diagnose you other than a spine specialist. Preferably a board certified spine surgeon. They really are the best at diagnosing you & advising you of the best course of action. It can take a frustratingly long time to get to the bottom of spine issues. The first step is seeing the right specialist & getting the correct diagnostic tests. Best of luck.

  • I was injured at work when a teenager about 60kg fell on me and then about a year ago a child ran through me. I have been in pain for the entire time in varying degrees and it is getting worse. I have had 7 lots of cortisone injections and a rhizotomy all of which only worked for short amounts of time. The neurologist says there is nothing wrong with me and that I just have bilateral facet arthropathy at multiple levels and mild anteroposterior instability and annular fissure at L4/5 and L5/S1. I have burning pain in my lower back and shooting pain in my hip buttock and leg and sometimes in my groin. There really is no rhyme or reason to this pain , and only settles completely if I am floating in a pool or lying down with heat. It is affecting all parts of my life and I am unable to do basic household duties without significant pain. Please help
