L5-S1 Endoscopic Distectomy cost Australia

I am a 36 year old male from Brisbane Australia currently on a tourist visa in Thailand since January 2015.

I have a herniated disc (L5-SI), for the last 5 weeks this has been putting pressure on the nerve and causing pain from my left buttock to the back of the knee (no back pain). I have visited doctors here in Thailand for opinions on surgery options and prices ($12k aud for endoscopic distectomy at xxxx hospital bangkok, very good doctor too), my experience here has been good so far and they even give opinions and prices over email (I've sent them the MRI report, images and x-rays) and also visited them in person to discuss all the details.

I've been disappointed so far by private Australian doctors who can't provide a ball park figure for a standard case such as mine, even with the very detailed MRI report, images and x-rays and my description of my physical examinations. They want me to fly home before they'll tell me anything. 2 have been good, giving me options on treatment but still no prices.

My decision to undergo surgery has time/financial considerations given that I am in a lot of pain and currently in Thailand. In Thailand, I can have surgery within a week, however, I would like to be in Australia where I have family and friends.

I am trying to work out if it is worth the cost and time to make a painful and uncomfortable flight home to Brisbane only to be further disappointed that I have to wait another 2-4 weeks (or more?) for treatment at a potentially greater cost than here in Thailand.

I would like to be able to compare treatment options and cost between what is available here in Thailand and Australia without having to jet-set across the globe but, at the moment I can't.

I will be flying home to Brisbane, but if I can't get the treatment in a suitable time frame in Australia, I'll be flying back to Bangkok but I'd rather avoid the delay.

I would prefer the minimally invasive endoscopic technique due to the reduced incision size, recovery time and risk of infection.

Can anyone with experience in Australia please advise how much this procedure cost you and the amount covered by Medicare. Also please advise if you have any good recommendations for Australian surgeons.
