How fast did your atrophy happen?

I wasn't sure where to post this but my question is for those who had/has atrophy or knows about it:

Atrophy due to nerve compression or damage in the spine....where did you experience it (was it local like the Thenar in the thumb or general like the whole arm) and how slow or fast did it progress? I read with compression, it will happen slowly (over several months) versus atrophy due to diseases which progresses and spreads at a more rapid rate.

And of course, what happened...surgery/PT/etc...to get it back, or did you not get it back?
