To those that had a 1 level ACDF then needed another one done.

Haven't been back here in a while. I had a 1 level ACDF C6/C7 July 2012. I have had a few flare ups since then but nothing lasting more than a week. However, 3 weeks yesterday I started getting neck pain again (not as bad as the first time) and sometimes it runs down my right arm. The the last couple of nights my arms have been going numb when sleeping.

Apart from the C6/C7 that I had fused (which is fully fused) I also had/have a small central disc protrusion and mild disc space narrowing at C5/C6. I am now starting to wonder if the C5/C6 has gotten worse. I have already seen my dr and will be going for an MRI but it can be up to a year to get an MRI here...

To those that have started with a 1 level and needed other levels done, how did you come to realize that another level herniated and needed to be done?

Missy, 1 level ACDF C6/C7 Monday July 16th 2012.

  • I am up for a single ACDF (C6/C7) but I'm posting to watch any/all responses because I've been curious about this myself.

...and it was the best decision of my life :-)

I had c4/5 fused twice. First surgery I didn't fuse so I had second surgery. First surgery was 2 years ago. Second surgery was one year ago. I am still having issues & when I was at my surgeon last month, he took X-rays. He said he noticed the spaces between the discs above & below my fusion were small? Even though he told me not to worry about them right now, it's hard not to? I have heard that after you have a fusion surgery, it compromises the discs above & below the fusion? I just didn't think it would start so soon?

I had C5-C7 ACDF in 06. At the time my C4-5 disc was iffy. I suggested to the surgeon that he do C4-C7 but he said no. In late 2013 I had C4-C5 added to the ACDF. I have very lax ligaments so I'm guessing I'm not done, possible eventual cervical posterior fusion.
