Much worse nerve pain after discectomy - does it get better ?

Hi, I am 8 days post op after a microdiscectomy on L5S1 . My foot pain has increased exponentially and is now truly excruciating . People tell me this is the nerve 'settling' but the pain is unreal. Has anyone else had this ? It seems to me that most people with radicular pain in legs, feet feel more or less instantly better. This certainly isn't my case and is very discouraging !
