Nerve root inflammation after MIcroDiscectomy - would steroid help ?

Hi, apparently nerve roots can get very irritated during the microdisctectomy procedure and cause continued pain after the op ( in my case in my foot). Does anyone know how long this nerve root inflammation can last ? My pain management specialist is suggesting a nerve root block ( steroid) to calm the pain. This has worked extremely well for me in the past ( pre-op). The surgeon himself hesitates and says it may impede healing . Thoughts ?

It can take months for nerves to heal. I would definitely listen to your surgeon on this one!

  • How long has it been since the OP?

I had my MicroDiscectomy 6 weeks ago now and the nerve pain down my leg has been getting better every week.
  • I have a better answer for you now. :)
I'm 4 weeks post-op and ended up in the ER this weekend because it was the only way for me to get an MRI. I was convinced I had reherniated due to the popping sound before my pain returned, but my MRI just showed inflammation. My surgeon prescribed a steroid pack and I'm following up with him next week. The oral steroids decrease inflammation and help with healing (or that's what my neurosurgeon said, at least). I don't know if this would be different for injections though.

  • I had intense leg pain immediately after my microdiscectomy (L4-L5, L5-S1) which pretty much left me unable to do anything. On day 4 I started a steroid dose pack and by 1pm I walked 2 miles. They were a slow 2 miles but I walked them. The following day, I walked 3 miles and have never looked back. I have had some tough days here and there but that dose pack was the best thing ever for me and got me on the road to recovery. Talk to your doctor and see if this is an option for you. May be worth a try. Good luck
