'Debris' removal after microdiscectomy

I had a microdiscectomy a month ago and have had worse foot pain since. The surgeon says he sees a 'mass' pressing on to the S1 nerve and this has to be removed. It could be a bit of fallen disc or just something that has broken off and got lodged next to the nerve. My question is - has anyone else had this happen ? Is the 'repair' operation like a MD and does it take just as long to recover ? Most importantly , did it work ??
