Chronic Muscle Tightness

I currently have 2 herniations in my neck, and moderate to severe stenosis in the C4-C5 region. The serious herniation is on my RIGHT side, but the issue I'm experiencing is on my LEFT side. I have chronic muscle tension and a dull aching pain on my left side. It's sometimes very stiff and difficult to turn my head. The muscle tension is constant and the only way to get SOME relief is to lay down.

A neurosurgeon I consulted advised NO surgery stating that since NO pain was on the RIGHT side, I wouldn't benefit from it anyway!

He did however suggest cervical facet joint injections. I'm going thru physical therapy and it has helped with my range of motion in regards to turning my head left or right.....but the constant muscle tension continues.....
Any suggestions that may help me please??

  • Well, I would go get more opinions. I had a facet injection at C4/5 and it made my pain unbearable for several days. The position the doctor put me in to do the injections flared up the pain from my herniated disc. I left with a 10+ pain level headache, in tears.
Also, my MRI didn't look "that bad" according to my Ortho, my third opinion doctor, a neurosurgeon finally decided to perform ACDF surgery on me, when he opened me up he immediately saw I had a torn ligament and the disc at C4/5 was obliterated, all of which my MRI didn't show.
So my advice to you, is get more opinions until someone is willing to do something to fix the issue. Facet injections and epidural safe all just temporary band aid solutions. My herniation was also mainly on the right and my worst pain was on the left. So MRI's aren't the be all to diagnosis. And not everyone follows the book with their symptoms.
Hang in there and get more opinions before your pain gets worse.
    Good luck to you!
