Multilevel Fusion/ not adjacent/Question

Orthopedic Surgeon reluctantly will do L3/4 and L5/S1 due to severely degenerated disc with slight slippage. L4/5 disc is perfect. He said he would do both at once from the front. Sounds like alot going on and what will happen to the good disc in between in 5 or 10yrs? I am in pain standing and walking. I am a diesel mechanic and now not sure what to do. I am nervous and one thing he said was a lifestyle change. I will be seeing a Neurosurgeon soon to get another opinion. Is this even worth considering. I am a 50yr old male in excellent physical shape except for these stupid discs.
