Back pain

Hi all,

My problem is that I have had some areas in my back which my doctor told me were tight muscles in various parts of my back. They start around my shoulder blades and I have some a little bit lower than that. When I had my first back massage a year ago when the masseuse hit one of those spots I almost "flew" off the table! She was able to get the muscles to finally relax but a little while later that began to tighten up again. The thing that bothers me the most is that I sleep on my back and midway through the night when I wake up my back with start "killing" me and I will not be able to get back to sleep. It just seems that I cannot find a mattress that will allow me to sleep through the night. I also have a herniated disc in my lower back but as long as I watch what I do and do not lift anything heavy I am okay there but these tight muscles in my back are getting to the point where I cannot get a good night's sleep. What would you suggest I do? Are any of these muscles relaxers any good?

I would appreciate any help you could give me.
