I woke up 2 1/2 months ago to a sharp pain in my thigh and close to the edge of the IT band and
a small amount at the very top of the hip flexors.
I work with a trainer 2 - 3 X week and he always encourages me to try to add more weight.
Sometimes I have next day soreness from these work-outs, but this pain increased the next few days
to a sharp pain when the leg was in certain positions. Never had this kind of pain from ''sore muscles''
before. I had spent many somewhat frustrating hours at the computer each of the prior 3 days and
assumed it was hip-flexor over-use from sitting.
I used maximum dosage of Alleve and ice....after a couple weeks I switched to heat and hot tub jets
on that thigh. After another couple weeks, the pain was also in the gluteus medius....almost a trigger point at that spot. I began stretching exercises from a PT friend...felt good....but results did not last long.
It hurt when sitting down and when standing up...plus trying to sleep with leg constantly going into a positon that hurt.,
A couple more weeks and I could not stretch that leg much at all...pain. Meanwhile, I have had
a total of about 7 hours of deep tissue massage...from a top-notch ''therapy'' oriented masseuse.
Always felt good and better for maybe a day...and then back to the pain . I was to the point
where when I go to stand, I cannot just put my foot down, I must extend the leg and then slowly
straighten out the muscle/tendon/ whatever it is...past the point of pain and then am set to go.
Standing up from a chair is the same.
An X-ray showed a very good hip joint...especially for being 71. One physician said it was my IT band
yet massage therapist worked on it and i had very little soreness at all...normal IT band.
Another physician thinks it is Trochanteric Bursitis....and I sure do fit the list of symptoms.
But the Physical Therapists ( and both massage therapists) have worked that area and I have
no pain when one with TB should scream when that area is palpatated. So...not that.
Orthopedist says cortisone shot next week. Problem is ... no one can find ''the spot'' and I am
not going to get that shot until he knows where to put it.
I now have some lower dosage Narco which I use at bedtime only and I do not intend to
live on that forever either.
I had Sciatica..down the leg...on the other side about 40 yrs ago and I got rid of it by
swimming and/or stretching in the pool. This is not like that Sciatica.
I think I have a spinal degeneration somewhere that keeps activating the nerve in those
muscles, such that it appears to be muscular, but really isn't. But, one Doc says if a
nerve, I would have the same pain all the time...not just in certain positions.
And...that nerve pain is burning, stinging, feeling pins-and-needles on the skin...
not sharp pain.
I believe I shall insist on an MRI and/or some other scan to check that out.
Now: please comment....and may I ask for some advice? Many, many thanks
