Hi! I'll answer the questions in a minute, I'm glad i found this site. not sure if I should be here or in neck pain. I find that I am growing increasingly frustrated with my medical team. I feel as though everyone keeps passing the buck......... you don't belong here, we are sending you to...... the last 2.5 years have been a disaster. So here's my situation:

I'm 35 (as of 2 months ago), and 2013 July 1st I was rear ended while at a dead stop, the person who hit me was going 45mph *ouch*. So Far, I have been to my general practitioner, nuero, nuero surgery, physical therapy, chiropractic, back to Nuero, and orthopedic and pain management. I met with orthopedic for all of 10 minutes. Long enough to be told I'm not a candidate and they sent me off to pain management.

So here's the background. the car accident caused sever whip lash, bad enough that While I was speaking with the officer, my neck completely locked up. ER bound. Given a shot and sent home with no visibility of fractures. 2 weeks of whining about pain and headaches GP sends me in for a CT. Next day phone call. There's a problem with the imaging and they don't want to scare me but looks like an aneurysm. Off to nuero I go. While there, they say, cant really tell if it is or not, we'll monitor. Meanwhile MRI is issued for my neck. a week later I'm told i have a bulging disc in C3/C4. No big deal, lay off activities until I feel better, another CT for Head in 6 months. Go back in 6 months. Repeat imaging. Same as before, only this time no word from the doctor. I'm able to view the image results online. I waited 3 weeks for her to call me..... Nada. I made the call and requested a different doctor. New doctor put me on a daily dose of something (sorry cant remember the name). and sent me to Nuero Surgery to find out whats up with my head......... lovely thought that I could drop dead any minute. Had to have an angiogram. Fortunately not an aneurysm. However I am now not insurable for life insurance or long term care. Yay. I went back to my GP and said this is crazy none of these specialist give a fig about my neck. I need someone to help with my neck. GP sends me to an orthopedic surgeon. He looks at my images. In one year I've gone from slight degeneration in C3/C4 to degeneration in my entire cervical spine with osteophites (SP?) in each level. Best thing to do now is Pain Management. My first trip in, to PM they tell me we are going to do a high dose of steroids - yeah cause I haven't already done that.

it has now been 10 months since my first pain clinic appointment. I have had 3 cervical injections (my last one was this past Thursday). While I was there I tried to bring up some extra issues I have been having and I was told after this shot, you're done with your treatment here. I asked for a refill on my Norco (quick back story, I've been taking this med since the accident, however, I only take 1/2 of the lowest dosage available. 2.5 years later I finally asked to be bumped up to the 7.5 so that when I split in 1/2 I'm only taking 3.75. 1/2 of the 5 wasn't doing it and a full 5 is to much for me to take. Since the accident I've had maybe 7 or 8 of theses prescriptions). You'd have thought I was in there every other week asking. or that I wanted something way stronger. So I feel lost. The neck pain gets relieved short term with these shots, but I've noticed spreading pain, fatigue, weak arms.... I have no one to talk to about any of this. I push through it - I dont have a choice. I'm tired of hurting and I'm sure those around me are tired of hearing it. They cant see the *ouch* areas and I dont look sick so as I've been told I should develop a pain tolerance.

PT didn't work for me, I stay active I fight to play sports there are a few other issues but this post is long enough! Thanks for taking the time to listen to me. Any advice is much appreciated!

I hope your day is a "good" day!

  • Surgery should be the last option as it doesn't always help and may create more problems. I had surgery and I suffer from new pains due to the surgery.

Surgery may be the last option. However, depending on the exact medical condition, surgery could also be the only option.

Make sure you do your research on the type of surgery that is being planned for you. Also consider seeking a second opinion. It is always better to have two doctors that agree with your condition and agree with the action plan.

Yes, it is true that some people have problems after surgery, but there are thousands who have had good success with their surgery and are now living an easier life.

thanks all. As of now I am not a candidate for surgery. Which I am fine with :) I just get frustrated that there is no plan of action. I actually called the pain management place back and depending on the results of this last cervical epidural we may be going forward with a medial branch nerve block. Kinda freaks me out, not gonna lie. Even if I was a candidate for surgery I dont think that I'm ready for that. I just want the radiating pain and weakness addressed. Thinking of pushing for some imaging, as no one has looked at my neck since January. just gets frustrating and I'm not even sure how to begin to be my own advocate.... at least without feeling like I'm whining. So glad I found this forum. Its nice to hear how others are coping and supporting one another!
