I've come here as an attempt at resolution of an ongoing pain situation has almost entirely ruined my life. My pain has been ongoing since July 20th. The day before I went to work and then the gym as I usually do. The next day I had some tightness and soreness in my low back and across the top of my pelvis on the left side.
Having been active my entire life, I'm 36 now, I just assumed it was typical soreness from the gym. I had an appointment with the ortho for a right hip range of motion issue that wasn't very bad, but I wanted to get it taken care of. While with the ortho I brought it up and he gave me a 5 day course of prednisone and said I'd be better in no time.
After the 5 days I was not better, in fact it was worse! I dealt with it for about 3 weeks while I waited for the doctor to get back to me. He set me up with a physical therapist and pretty much washed his hands of me.
After 2 weeks of PT I couldn't take it anymore. The pain had become a monster, shooting pain and numbness down my left leg, down to the bottom of my leg (just above the ankle), with incredible pain around the hip area. The pain in my hip area feels like razor blades are trying to work their way out, destroying every muscle on their way out (10/10).
Between work, life, and my pain, I was struggling. I called the doctor and stressed that I need to see him soon.
The appointment came quick, luckily, but the visit was less than helpful. The pain in my hip was dismissed, and a lumbar mri was ordered. I was told to continue going to work, and that aleve should take the pain away. Needless to say, neither of those things worked.
I was left going to PT, laying on the floor while not at PT, and getting about 3-4 hours of sleep per night. The aleve had no effect on the pain, none.
The results from the mri came back showing bulging L4-L5 and bulging L5-S1. The ortho passed me of to neuro. The nurse practitioner in Neuro was sympathetic and referred me back to ortho while scheduling a lumbar injection.
We are 2 months from the initial visit at this point. I have pain constantly, unless I lay on the floor with ice. I have no pain management, unless you consider 220mg of aleve twice a day a solution (it wasn't). And I have an injection scheduled.
At this point I'm thinking this injection is going to be the miracle cure. Really, I'm praying it's going to help me not get fired from my job, not lose my girlfriend (she's great, very supportive, but she didn't sign on for this. Frankly, I wouldn't blame her, I'm useless right now), not drain my savings, not destroy my life,...
The injection went well. Initially I felt great! The next day was better than I'd felt in weeks, months really. By the third day I was back to the floor.
Out of desperation I went to a walk in clinic near my house. The practitioner there was helpful and sympathetic. She took a hip xray, set me up with a hip mri, prescribed me Torodol (this stuff is hard on your stomach), and gave me some Lidocaine patches.
The hip mri came back negative. The xray was negative. The walk in clinic became unresponsive to follow up. My hope disappeared under the weight of this life of pain.
I managed to get in touch with the Neuro practitioner and get in to see her. She brought in a Neuro surgeon and he said surgery is the next step... If another injection doesn't do the trick. So, a second injection is scheduled.
Interestingly, the Torodol was working well. It's just a 5 day course though because of its negative effects on the stomach. I managed to get a refill in the meantime. So, to make them stretch, I was only taking half the dosage per day.
Anyway, sorry this is getting so long, the second injection was unsuccessful also. The Neuro surgeon wants to do a disectomy. My pain is actually worse now than it was, I didn't think it was possible. Maybe it's just more constant (it is). Maybe it's that I can deal with the shooting leg pain, but the hip pain is destroying me. I can't move, I can't sleep, I have to just lay there for sex (when my libido struggles to life), my boss is running out of patience...
I am in the process of getting my records sent to a very well regarded facility in another state as I am desperate for this ordeal to end!
Every person I have spoken to about this dismisses the hip pain and focuses on the L4-S1 issue. I'm sure they are related, but I really think there is something additional going on in my hip area. Is it insane to think that perhaps there are 2 things going on?
I am currently on gaba pentin. 2 days in and little relief, just foggy kinda. The torodol worked better, but after 2 more refills, my stomach is beginning to suffer.
I am running out of time before my life falls apart. I try to stay positive, but am struggling.
Shooting pain down left leg, to just above the ankle.
Numbness and tingling in left foot.
Intense pain around the left hip joint, on the side and in the back of the area.
Pain in the left hip joint when loaded and forced to move.
Pain in the left hip area when deep pressure is applied to specific areas, mostly muscular it seems but may tendon or ligament.
Wow, this got long, but it was somewhat cathartic. Please reply if you have any experience or ideas with what is going here.
