Boating after ACDF----DDD

Someone on the surgery board said they were told not to go in a boat ever again!! Dave's Dr. said it was OK to go out when it's calm, but not really rough. He said he knew someone who broke their back riding on a speedboat.

Now I'm wondering if boating when it's rough exacerbated his DDD.

Do we have to get rid of the boat?

Ok, I have had 4 Lumbar and 3 Cervical (ACDF) surgeries plus I have 4 current herniated Thoracic discs.
I love boating and still boat
We have a pontoon boat (20' with 50hp) so we just do easy cruising on our lake. NO problem what so ever

I will say that whenever I've gone on a friends speed boat and they slap the waves, I pay for it the following day. My whole spine shakes and hurts for a couple of days.

So boating is fine, even in rougher waters, its just the pounding in hitting the waves at high speeds is what is going to make you suffer

  • Hey Linda,
Yep avid boater here! But you gotta understand what kind of boat I have when the doc said I shouldn't be in the boat. We have a 20' tunnel hull with 350 hp. It used to have 280 hp, but blew the motor last year and of course the new one has more power. Our boat exceeds 100 mph. I believe it was the speed that concerned the doc. As far as waves...hmmm....at 100 mph there's not much boat in the water so waves really are less of a problem at that speed than 40 mph.

    Here's a pic......
  • Just don't do what I did 2 weeks post op celbrating 4th of July and friends said they were going out on the pontoon...I thought this was slow,,it wasn't they pulled kids on tubes we went back in after 1 hour. I hurt afterward and probably that' s why I am having muscle spasms. Better now with Soma.
I just found out from my husband last night that they also removed a large amount of bone around the side exiting nerve c6-7 that was compressed. They had told me post op I just didn't hear them.
    I'd follow doc.orders. :)
Soo...is this different than ACDF C 6-7? or the same?.

  • Hey friends....

I soo miss being out on the boat. My good friend that takes me camping and boating and tubing...etc. has invited me a bunch of times this summer, but I just can't do it right noe.

SO to hear that some are out there doing it with minimal issues is very encouraging to me. I used to water ski, and tub a lot but I just don't no if thats a good thing to be doing after having a neck fusion.

I am still actually waiting to have a 2 level C 4-5 and c 5-6 ACDF, but the ortho I saw for a second opinion wants more testing..an EMG and an MRI of my shoulder to make sure that I have not torn my rotator cuff.

I love to go fishing as well so boating is in my blood. My friend actually calls me "Boat Chick" LOL No boat chick this summer but hopefully nest summer I can get out there in the warm sun and lsiten to the water gently slapping the hull of the boat. One of my favorite sounds.

Patricia, what a beauty! Looks so fun....
