paying for a MRI scan

I am just enquiring if people know how much an MRI scan would cost?

A quick sum up is I've had lower back pain since march my doctor said it was just a pulled muscle
I've been back and to to my doctor even changing my doctor as i felt i was not being listened to,
I had an MRI in june that was clear, The doctor just said its damaged muscles and ligaments
I am also having physiotherapy,

I get the symptoms that are similar to sciatica , i get bad flare ups of bad pain and pins and needles
I also get really bad pain in my right leg when it feels like the pressure is building up so bad i would happily have a doctor cut it of it is agonising pain,
I get pain across my lower back, but my spine also hurts at the tail end and sometimes higher up,
I get bad pain around my right knee, my whole right leg also hurts,, I have also noticed that my right leg doesn't like to be bent for too long,
I can't sit up straight for too long otherwise it makes the pain worse,
I also get pain that goes into my bum cheek and down my right leg, This is not every day and sometimes i can have a week without suffering from this,
Every day i have pain in my back and in my right leg,
My right leg below my knee has been painful for the last few days i can't have my socks pulled up especially if they are tight due to it making the pain worse

I get pain when i am walking and just washing up causes me pain
My Job did send me to a occupational health doctor who said i had mechanical back pain and even he said what i told him did sound like sciatica or a trapped nerve, He told me to tell my doctor to send me to a pain specialist so i am waiting for my doctor to sort that out,

I also get a bad pain in my right side this is ever since i was kneeling up and went to push quite a large heavy box back towards my skirting board and it felt like i was stabbed in my side it was very painful,
So know i get bad flare ups of pain in my side

I did mention sciatica to my doctor but he said due to the scan being clear it can't be,, every time i try to mention different ideas to my doctor i just get the scan was clear so it can't be,

I am on 9 neurontin and 8 solpadol,
I take one amitriptyline before bed to try help me sleep

Any help or advice would be very helpful
Thanks Clare x

I'm not sure why you would want to have repeat MRI.
I'm sure the cost varies, not only upon where you live, but which hospital you use.

If Doctor is only repeating saying that scan is clean....there are a variety of other testing that can be done to help fine cause and more proper treatment.

    Are you seeing spine specialist?
My primary tried working with my pain about two years before referring me to pain management.
He did variety of other testing, not even mentioned to me before, and many tests of his tests revealing issues and he had proper treatment plan.

  • The only other tests i have had is a full blood work done,
My doctor has not said about any other tests that we can try and seems very reluctant to do any further tests, they just seem to still think it will settle down
but are very happy to just dish out the tablets,

My doctor has not mentioned a spine specialist

Wanting another MRI is just to make sure nothing was missed and i have heard that they can do a different MRI scan which is better than the lying down one,, I have also read that they can inject you with this dye that can show up problems that otherwise can be missed

    You had one in June
It was fine. Because you have pain does not mean another MRI is needed
Doctors need to justify and provide rational to the insurance company
If you feel you might know more or something is not right seek another opinion using your existing films

  • Its just that i don't feel like i am getting any help from my doctors, They seem to be set on their diagnoses and seem like they don't want to try anything new,

I have 2 part time jobs and one has just decided to let me go due to being unable to keep my place open any longer and i at the end of my sick pay with the other job, So i really need to sort my back problem out quickly as my bills are just running up,

I don't have bad pain all the time and when i do it takes about 3 days normally to settle back down a bit, If i have had a really bad pain flair then it takes longer,
The pain can sometimes be a lot worse in my leg than my back pain is,, the past 2 days my right leg and side have been very painful, The pain in my leg was in my whole leg down to my big toe but it also felt like the pressure was building up in it,

If anyone has had similar experiences i would be happy to hear from you or if anyone can tell me to suggest tests or anything to my doctor i would be very grateful,

I am just seeing if anyone has had any time where they had no pain,
but in base of there spine has a burning tingling sensation it goes into the top of my bottom
I have had it all day today
  • my scans were clear for 11 months (supposedly) having them with and without contrast....9 MRI's btw
and i then had done some research and found a test called a discogram it did not find all of whats wrong but it did help me find an annular tear that did not show up on an MRI or bone scan that was slowly leaking onto nerves causing damage over time
what type of dr are you seeing? are you in the states? do you have insurance?

Also a sitting or standing does not give the same quality of imaging. doesnt allow the radiologists to get the same type of views...just in my experience.

you can read my story i'll share what ever i can if it helps ...im under how did i get here

In my experience find an outside of hospital facility that does MRI and in your network. I went to have one done in the hospital it was 5,000. That was in network I have good insurance, not in the marketplace. The MRI at the facility was 1,500. Huge difference. Im in the east coast where everything is expensive.

  • For how did i get hear
I'm in the uk and don't have insurance, so im seeing my nhs doctor
They seem very reluctant to do anything else because the symptoms i have don't fully match certain problems,
I can have a few days where my back pain is very mild and doesn't bother me at all and then i can wake up with pain or slowly throughout the day it gets worse, I have times/days when the pain in my leg is worse then my back is,
Sometimes its feels like there is something at the base of my spine.

The doctors just say it will carm down,, but im at the point know tho one of my part time jobs have let me go, i have bills that are just running up and my doctor has know put me on tablets for depression

I will read your story tho and i sure i will find it helpful
    Thanks Clare

can you give me your symptoms. Tell me where your pain starts, does it start with certain movement. Bending sitting standing?? Don't do anything to hurt yourself what happens if you walk on your heels or toes? what about crossing your foot over to the top of your knee? Both legs or just one? pain and where send it to private message . These are things the dr should have done in an exam. I dont know how much costs for health care/ tests are in the UK. You can call facilities to find out costs with out insurance I am sure they have like the states "charity" cases...lets face it your health without it you've already lost the part time job.
How long have you been dealing with these symptoms?
I think the very first test is another MRI, with a neurosurgeon. Your pain is no longer acute pain its becomings chronic lasting longer then a few weeks, It really is a test that can show a dr so much. nerve issues, disk issues...i think its the best place to start. They probably are not ordering tests because you don't have insurance which is not right. I would go see a neurosurgeon not an orthopedic. Things can be missed on tests I have had a test that showed nothing and if I wasn't persistent with getting tests done the disk tear would be overlooked still without having a discogram. Which if you had an MRI maybe that would be a test to consider they do 3 levels maybe you have an issue at L5-S1, maybe you have facet hypertrophy....look that up see if you have any symptoms like that....thats an inflammation thing. Maybe having you do a steroid pack for 5 days would help ? A prednisone pack not sure if its the same there.
Again, not knowing the insurance in UK what happens when you go to a hospital? They can usually get you a social worker who can assist you with seeing a dr you can't be denied care.
The reason I'm asking is I'm not a dr but I can give you information that may help you based on what Ive gone through not that i am diagnosing just trying to help and pass along what Ive learned a good patient is an educated one.

  • keep me posted your symptoms are very much like mine I also read up on the National Health Care System To understand how your system works. Again please take what i say are from my experiences. Are there job protection plans in the UK read up on Americans with Disabilities Act and see if there is anything in your government that has job protection. My job was Human Resources and Labor but I am only familiar with the laws here. Again this is just advice to read what the states offer and maybe there is something to help you over there. I just hear the desperation in your post, being in pain and having bills pile up can seem overwhelming hopefully something I have said has helped you.
