What meds are best for nerve pain/damage down leg ?

Hello everyone,
Interested in what works best for nerve pain and nerve damage for the sciatic nerve? I am 4 weeks post op for lumbar fusion revision surgery and had extreme leg pain prior to surgery for a year. Doc said I will have a chronic recovery as nerve was quite inflamed and rubbed raw (L4 level) as observed during surgery. I had a previous 360 2 level fusion (l4-S1) and did not fuse at L4 with broken hardware. I have tried neurontin and Lyrica. Both wipe me out and give blurred vision.
Anything else worth trying?
Thanks in advance and god bless.

Hi Mouldy68 and Welcome

I use Cymbalta for nerve pain and sciatica and works well for me. I also use an infrared platinum heating pad on my leg and foot for relief as well as pain meds. Best wishes. Charry

I had to start at a very low dosage of Neurontin

I was not able to tolerate the initial titration using 300 mg caps, so we used the same titration with 100 mg caps to start. I was able to tolerate Neurontin and slowly build to a level where I have excellent coverage for sciatica.

Lyrica and Neurontin seem to be the medication

of choice when it comes to dealing with nerve pain.

I've used both, but I had some bad negative effects when my Lryica dosages was increased.

I've been on Neurontin for several years now and have had zero negative impacts.

I started with a low dosage of about 300mg a day, over time worked up to about 2600mg a day and currently I take 600mg in the afternoon and 600mg at night.

Without neurontin, my nerve pain was very difficult to control.

Everyone is different, so I would suggest talking this over with your doctor. He/She is in a much better position to recommend what is correct for you.

I

could not tolerate any of the nerve meds - was in a walking coma and scared hubs to death. So for me, it's only pain meds and SCS (spinal cord stimulator). Most days, it works great. Occasionally, I just endure. Nerve pain never stops, just 24/7 burning, searing. I wish I could tolerate the nerve meds - I know folks who got off all other meds and just take a nerve med. Not me.

Hope you find something that works for you.

nerve pain meds

nerve pain is hard to deal with. work with a good pain management doctor is the first step. i tried neurontin and kepra and had the double vision and felt like i was drunk 24/7. i'll tell you cymbalta helped but gave me too many side effects and was very horrible to withdraw from for me. was a nightmare.
topomax helped, but again, too many side effects. i am now on lamictal and that works well for the pain, i do feel a little forgetful but not like i was on neurontin, it cut back my narcotic use to very small amt.
it is like a chemistry experiment, you just try until you find the right one, a good pm doctor will help you with this. good luck!
