CERVICAL RHIZOTOMY

I just had a cervical facet rhizotomy 5 days ago. I think the DR. ablated C4, 5 and 6 (where I have disc bulges) and facet hypertrophy. My usual pain went away almost 100% (between spine and shoulder blade)right side. But 4 days after the procedure I started experiencing something strange that has never occurred before. The back of my right skull is really tender almost like a line of pain starting at the base of my skull extending to the top back of head on the right side. My Dr's office is closed I so can't talk to anyone there until tomorrow. Ibuprofen seems to help. The only RX I got was for a muscle relaxer (Amrix) which doesn't seem to help much. Just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this or if I should be concerned.

Ive had many rhizotomys done

Ive had many rhizotomys done in the cervical level and i have always had alot of pain afterwards. Once I had no feeling on the back of my neck but extreme pain. I had faith in the rhizotomy for awhile, but the post op pain isnt worth it to me anymore. I hope it gets better, you may just be sore with spasms. The Dr. could never do anything for my soreness after the procedure, just meds.

cervical rhizotomy

I had one side done on my neck on the 15th I have the same pain as I had before but I was told that it will be about 3 weeks before the pain should improve. I am having the other side next wednesday. I am on the same meds as before this and was told that they would see how much improvement this will give me. They are also planing to do the lower part of my back in the future. I have cancer and I am hoping this will help me. I will post my results in the future

i remember

I remember being told that pain free feeling could be a good sign. But unfortunately it is ususally followed by an increase in pain for 1-3 weeks.

The nerves are a little upset with being messed with, it will take some time for them to calm down.
is what iwas told.

I remember being very sore and painful after it was done. I have had 3 done on my cervical area. C2-7 one side at a time - it helped ROM but did not addres the pain thru shoulders and between the shoulder blades.

hope that this can help you

Cervical Rhizotomy

I am scheduled for a CR on 29 July. I was told I would not receive any meds for relaxing or pain management during the procedure. Has anyone been given any type of meds before the procdure? I am very nervous about going through with this procedure after reading mnay comments on the net.

I have had several of these done, all without pre-meds. They are uncomfortable for a few days afterwards, but not terribly so.

Cervical Rhizotomy

I have been told it CR takes 30-90 minutes. Can anyone here please let me know what you experienced and how long it took. Thx Eric

It all depends on how long it takes the doc to locate the right area. Basically the appointments they schedule for these types of procedures are 60-90 minutes. That allows for all the prep and post procedure paperwork.

RE: CR

Thanks for the info. My first 2 treatments with the steroid injections were very painful and lasted 30 minutes. They even caused flash backs from my car accident. Hopefully I will get through this and return to living without chronic pain........... E

Re: CR

Had my first CR procedure done 29 July 09. Doctor provide many shots of freezing and completed a total of 6 burns to nerves at C2 & C3. Had some good meds from my other doctor so spent the first night sleeping. Since then the pain at the back of my neck and left side of my head have been excrutiating. As long as I apply an ice back the pain is bearable. Ibuprophine has been useless and only made me feel sick to my stomach. It is now 4 Aug and I am still in pain but the tenderness and pain level appear to be decreasing. The facial nerves are still painful but from my understanding the burn treatment can take up to 4 weeks to feel the full effects. I was asked by the doctor if I would be willing to have a second CR done in 3-6 months. I said yes the day I had it done but I think I will wait and see how this one helps.

Rhizotomy update

I just wanted to let ya'll know that my cervical rhizotomy lasted a whole 3 months. I am very disappointed because I was miserable for about 2 weeks after the procedure. I am tired of pain. I believe I have tried everything. I have an appt with a surgeon next week for a consultaton for ACDF. I am getting depressed and cry myself to sleep because I hurt so bad. I am done with injections and rhizotomies. I am upset because i think the pain management dr. got carried away with the rhizotomy. It was my understanding he was only going to do 1 or 2 levels level, but it turns out that he did all levels so that after the rhizotomy I had shooting pain up the back of my head which i had never experienced before. I think the DR must have hit the occipital nerve and got overagressive with the the rhizotomy. If anyone has an opinion please post a comment. I have done PT, chiropractor, massage, tens unit, tons of trigger pt injection, epidural injections, inverter table, lots of hot baths, ice, biofreeze, bengay, heating pad advil, alleve, tramadol, hydrocodone,Darvocet, flexeril, amirix, skelaxin, baclofen, robaxin, lyrica, neurontin, zanaflex. Nothing seems to help. I have been diagnoses with herniated discs c3-7 with facet hypertrophy. I have lots of pain between my spine and shoulder blade only on the right side. When the pain gets really bad the back of my right arm throbs and my hand tingles and hand grip gets week. Myelogram done 1 year ago showed no compression, so the surgeon did not recommend surgery at that time. Called PM dr to get more pain pills and they want to see me first to give me botox. But now I am leary about going back after the rhizotomy problem and occipital neuralgia. Any opinion or advice would be appreciated.
