Ever turn your neck and it snaps?

I was making dinner tonight which is very rare for me and was at the sink and turned my neck and got such a sharp pain and my neck locked and pain shot down to my left shoulder and upper arm up to my head on the left side and lasted for a few seconds and it was like a sharp spasm and my head and neck were tingling. Does this sound similar to someone with C-spine issues before you had surgery? I've had this before but not for years now. Did this go away with Physiotherapy or surgery or any medication you take? Thanks. Charry

Snaps

Howdy Charry,

2 surgeries so far, and still have the neck snaps pretty much everyday. Some of them hurt (without radicular issues), others just catch my attention. Its supposedly the ligaments that are snapping as they are tight in some areas, and not in others.

Since yours is inducing radicular symptoms, you might want to mention that to your doctor. That can be a whole different can of worms if there are symptoms with the snaps, vs just the snap.

Thanks Brenda for answering

Maybe I should have said spasms? Well I do have that C6-C7 impingement but haven't had trouble for about 3 years or since I stopped working. I'm taking Lyrica 25mg at night and it knocks me out for 10 hours and I'm so dopey. Hard to believe I was on the max dose before. I'm supposed to take it 3x day 25mg but I sleep all day it's like my body can't get used to it! I'll tell my Dr. in a couple of weeks, I still haven't got an MRI for my neck yet as my Dr. said if you're not going to get surgery why do you need an MRI? She win't even give me an MRI for my back in over two years. sigh. O C

Spasms

Howdy Charry,

My spasms calmed down a lot about 6-8 months post op. Now before surgery, they were constant and very painful to say the least! It would sometimes feel like my neck and shoulder muscles were a thick rubber band that was constantly being pulled really tight, and then released fast! Ouch!! Ice helped, but didn't stop them. Since they knew surgery was on the table, they didn't give me anything - less drugs the better I was told before surgery?

I'm starting to get them again thanks to the C7/T1, but this time (weird) they are more in my arm and hand? The spasms get so bad my hand cramps really hard. I told ya weird - maybe normal, dunno, weird to me anyways! (G)

As for MRI's, nodding. My Neurologist, Orthopedist, surgeon are similar in thought, so when I was told to get my cervical and lumbar done, backed up with "I am hoping surgery will not be needed", tells me (and my insurance) that it is in the back of their minds. Looking at the MRI's, this should be an interesting appointment in 2 weeks. Sigh...

Wow! 25mg knocks you out for 10 hours? I take 150mg 2x a day, and barely notice (short of lack of nerve pain mind you) if I took it! I was dizzy, sleepy for the first week I was on it, then that side affect went away. Once in a while I do get sleepy, but it seems to happen when the weather is crappy. Not sure what's up with that. I give it 3 hours before I drive to be sure I am not having one of those sleepy days. (G)

I would bring the spasms up with your doctor, especially since you haven't had surgery, it could show a change is going on. But you probably already know that as an ER nurse. But that is what I would do. Please let me know how it goes - spasms bite!!

Yes Brenda

I got the numbness right down to my middle and ring finger when I got the spasm and I think it's the C7 impingement that was seen on the x-ray. I used to take 600mg of Lyrica in divided doses 200 3x day for over a year and was fine so don't know why this small amount knocks me out and I certainly don't want to gain back the 45lbs I gained on Lyrica before! Keep you posted and let me know how it goes for you. Smile Charry

Humm

Usually if the middle finger is in there, that is the C6 nerve root, the half of the ring finger (depends) is it on the side of the middle finger? If so, C6, if on the pinkie side that is the C7 (big difference on levels there). Lucky me, have most levels now involved so rather sensitive to em! (G)

600mg a day of Lyrica? Why? Even (In the US) they state that over 300mg has no clinical improvement? I just looked at the sleeve of info (I just refilled) to see if something changed, and it says over 300mg a day doesn't make any improvements based on their studies?

I hate the weight gain, but I have the nerve pain over weight gain for sure!! (G) I can deal with the mechanical pain, but the shooting nerve pain, pass! As you know Charry, narcotics nor opiates help (not) on nerve pain. That is why me and Lyrica are 'buds.' Smile

In closing, if your ring finger is numbing on the side of your middle finder, you are looking C6...pinkie side...C7

Hi Charry

There are times my neck snaps SO loud people in the next room can hear it. It doesn't hurt except for the second it snaps then all pain goes away. What it is I don't have a clue but my surgeon did do a MRI to make sure nothing was going on. He found nothing. I do know there are times it pops so loud I am afraid to move my neck for fear that I broke something. Lol.

MRI

Yes tell her that you are seriously considering surgery and then you can get your MRI. It is unfortunate that you that we all need to "play the game" in order to find out what is going on with our neck. My OSS said the same thing. SO a few years ago I said that I may be willing to have surgery depending on what the MRI said. That was 2-3 years ago. I wasn't ready emotionally even though my neck was physically. So he told me that I would know when I was ready on all fronts physically, emotional and to let him know. He was right. I knew. Good luck. Smile

I know exactly what you mean........

..........thought I was the only person who had these 'episodes'. Do they stop you dead in your tracks and the pain carries you off to another world for a few seconds???????? Yep, HATE THEM DREAD THEM and yes, I have to have surgery soon for C-5 thru T-1, so I can understand that those 'spasms' were a precursor to the junk I've now got to deal with! And I'm NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT!!!!!!!

Hang in there girl,

Hi Rhona

Yes That's the pain I get! It's very hard to describe but dead in your tracks works. Tingling, numbness and it's like someone just turned your neck for you like a Chiropractor did to me once with out me knowing he was going to do that. I hope you're surgery goes well and keep us posted how you're doing. Charry
