What does "mass effect" on hemicord mean

Guys, I need some help determining what this means. Not seeing the NS for another week so I hate to wait to get an idea. Previously had laminectomy on C6-C7 in 2006. Then 2 level ACDF on C5-C7 in 08. Latest MRI (since I'm having problems again) says C4-C5: Moderate sized right paracentral disc protrusion effacing the ventral thecal sac with mass effect on the ventral right hemicord. Uncinate process spurring and facet joint hypertrophy mildly narrow the neural foramina bilaterally. Thanks for any help you can offer. (Understanding no formal medical opinions.)

Should clarify

I should clarify I'm not looking for medical advice, just a possible definition to what the term "mass effect" might mean.
