Methadone - Can any other pain meds be used in conjunction with this? Just curious if people combine anything with this methadone or can you not?

Thanks !

I do...

My doc just switched me from Oxycontin 40 mgs ER two times a day to the methadone (2 10mg 2 times per day) with 4 oxycodone 15 mg IR for BT. I don't know if he will continue this since we are in the titrating up stage. I find that the methadone works great but I am literally falling asleep at times. Not even tired, just exhausted...do you get that? How long have you been on it? Thanks.

yes

I was just switched from oxycontin to methadone, I have been constantly been falling asleep during the day. The Doc says that the sleepiness will subside after you get used to the medicine. I think it is worth it because methadone has been great for my pain so far...good luck, I hope you get used to the medicine soon : )

Yes, methadone can be

Yes, methadone can be combined with other pain meds, but methadone is the primary med, or long acting, and your doctor can add one of the short acting meds to cover breakthrough pain if needed.
You do have to be careful though because of the long half life of methadone.

Also be aware that methadone

Also be aware that methadone tends to 'hog' opiate receptors, so when you take breakthrough meds, you may notice less relief than previously. This is not a rule, but certainly occurs in some patients, myself included. Methadone/dilaudid is the combo that works for me.

methadone does work

as the previous person said, i take methadone 20 mg x 2 a day and have had excellant results for 2 yrs now. i also get oxycodone for break thru pain but like the other person said , you wont notice much of a difference, in fact i have found that if the methadone isnt doing the job you probably need a little more methadone instead of the break thru medicine. it doesnt make me sleepy and never has, but i think that everyone has different reactions. its more likely that whatever an opiates reaction on your system is is the same in relation to the methadone. but i only went to methadone knowing i had a lifetime of chronic pain ahead. if you have to stop taking it or think you will have to in the future i probably would stay away because its very nasty to break away from or so i have been told

I agree

I have been on methadone for about 2 1/2 years now and it works very well for my pain. I do have a script for muscle relaxers and percocet but rarely ever take it unless I overdo it.
I take the largest dose of methadone at about 7 PM at night. That helps me to sleep off many of the side effects like sleepiness so that I do not have to deal with it as much during the day.

the sleepiness i would welcome.

every pain medication i have ever taken gives me the opposite effect including methadone, i take it in the morning and with in say 40 minutes its like i drank a mt.dew most often. so obviously everyone is different, but i definately do have a problem with constipation all though i dont really eat a whole lot. the neurosurgeon i saw years ago told me if you have back you should never smoke and like a lot of people i found that pain medication acted much like drinking in that it gave me the want of smoking. i just finally gave up the smoking partially due to being out of work and even giving the soda pop. you never know it just might help
