I had a L5 disc blow out the other day,DR. says it "broke" he says he can remove the piece or do a fusion w/rods and screws. My left leg and foot are numb and the calf muscle is hurting and weak. In Feb I had a cervical 3 level ACDFC3-6.
People are telling me now that if I'm gunna go in the hospital to have surgery,I might as well have the fusion because that will lessen the chances of going back, which may be the case if he just removes the piece.
I'm told by the Neurosurgeon and Neurologist if I do nothing, my leg will get weaker and weaker but they can't guarantee the nerve damage will get better.......at a loss

  • Is fusion with rods and screws the only option your NS gave you? I have never heard or read about a "broken" disc. However, I have heard that in some circumstances that surgery will not improve nerve damage. I would get another opinion so that you may feel more comfortable with your decision. Again, this is major surgery.
  • Yes, there are no guarantees of correcting nerve damage. However, I guess he disc did actually break a piece off .So, as stated they cane remove that and hopefully take that oressure off the nerve or fuse the entire area...thanks for your reply

  • a second and maybe even third opinion. I would think that at a minimum they would need to remove the broken piece so that you lessen the likelihood of permanent nerve damage. Has anyone offered a discectomy? I had a radical MicroD in which they removed most of the disc and I know that it weakens the area and there is possibility of rupture. But, I have heard that with fusion you are putting more pressure on the discs above and they may rupture. kind of a catch 22 but I would get some more opinions before I made my decision. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
