Hi everyone. I have been reading the postings for the last couple of days, and boy do I feel better knowing that I'm not alone. Background on me is that I was in a MVA on 3/04. I tried all conservative treatment to avoid surgery. Including cervical epidural injections in which all my back, shoulder and neck muscles locked up after the injection. I stopped after 2. On 11/05 fusion of levels C5-7 of which level C6-7 didn’t fuse. Bone stimulator only increased pain level so it was discontinued. 1/07 Iydet procedure on level L5-S1 as doctor did not want to do a 3 level fusion on me. 1/07 Lumbar fusion L3-4. Lumbar surgery was to take 4 hours and took 6 ½ due to blood re-circulating that long I wound up with multiple DVT’s and PE’s and almost died! #:S 9/07 Cervical revision posterior levels C5-7. To date I have headaches from my neck espicially when the weather is changing (I hate being a human barometer :( ). My low back is still giving me a lot of trouble. I am on a bone stimulator again for it. It is very hard to stay positive but I am trying. :D I am schedule to have Lumbar epidural injections done starting Oct. The NS says that the reason I had a bad experience with the cervical injections was because of who did it. I figure I’ve trusted him with my life so far so I’ll trust him again. My main question is has anyone else had bad results with cervical epidural injections and then a positive outcome with the lumbar. I know that I am not the norm, :))( but if at least one other person had this happen I’ll feel a lot better. ;) Thank you for any input.

  • I have had lumbar epidural injections before and never had a problem with them but they did not help me. Theyre worth a try, but in my experience if there is something such as a disc creating pressure which causes the pain I doubt the injection will help until the pressure is relieved. Good luck.
  • Definitely worth a try they have a 50-75% chance of working i had one done. But i only had a 15-30percent chance because i have a L4 L5 vertebres that are condensing, he said possible collaption in the fiture. But they might be able to help you a lot to dont even hurt you dont feel a thing besides IV. Good luck hope you get better.

  • I have had many lumbar injections. Everyone is different. They are the best form of pain relief for me. They usually take 3-5 days to start working and they only last around 2-3 more weeks.

    Good luck to you!
  • I've had ESI's for cervical and lumbar - the cervical had better results but there was less damage / herniation. Lumbar worked as well, but not for more than 1-2 weeks. I have stuck with the same doc for my ESI's and I would not switch, I am waiting for her to return from maternity leave to get another :)

Good luck to you, sounds like you have alot going on (and I like your quote).
    Jan 2009 L5-S1 ALIF

  • BEWARE! They never helped me either! I have a L4-L5 bulge, and L5-S1 herniation and a free floating fragment on S1. I had 3 corticosteroid epidural injections and NONE of them helped!!!! I got a female mustache for the first time in my life, HORRIBLE Depression and mood swings, and my period stopped for 3 months afterwards only to start on the 4th month and hasn't stopped yet!!! It's been over 40 days!

The side effects were definetely worse than the outcome! They DIDN'T HELP A DARN THING for me! And Aquaman has to be careful because after about 3, it will "eat" your bone and start disolving them in your body eventually making your back worse. BEWARE!!! If you can avoid them, DO! Have a facet block and see if a rhizotomoy will help. It helped in my S1 area to get rid of my sciatica, but didn't work in my lunbar.
Everyone is different..Just beware of the side effects!
