side effects of fentanyl patch

so my doctor and I are trying to come up with an idea for pain relief for my herniated disc instead of taking 2 percocets every 4 hours. He brought up the patch and we are going to talk more about it next week. My question is, what are the side effects. The percocet really makes me feel loopy but I was wondering if the fentanyl patch made anyone feel the same way since it is in patch form not a pill form. Thanks!

  • Hi Tina,

I have been on the Fentanyl 25 patch since October 08. The first 2 or 3 days I felt kind of loopy and drowzy & sick. I then got used to it! I got the best & most consistent pain relief from the patch than from any other pain med. You get a small amount of a strong med every hour. It was also the first time that I wasn't waking up from pain all the time in the middle of the night. I never felt any kind of "high" from the patch- just tired. I must say that my short term memory has not been great. There are lots of people in chat that can agree with that- LOL ! My body is now very used to the patch, and I am trying weekly trigger point injections and topomax in hopes of delaying any increase in dosage. Some people in here have not liked the patch, but I could never have done physical therapy and gotten my shoulder out of "frozen shoulder" syndrome without it.
If you decide to try it, I hope it works well for you. I suggest that you ask your doctor for some free tegaderms to cover the patches for your showers. They are very expensive. Remember not to let them get too hot- don't wear them in a hot bath, direct sunlight, or hot tub. I also suggest that you check to see what your state laws and car insurance rules are about driving. I had to sign a pain mgt. contract- no driving- no drinking. It has been so worth the pain relief!
I am no health prof., but you can always PM me.

    Good Luck & God Bless!!

  • I had a 75mg patch on after surgery and I puked horrible - i mean power puked everything - i almost ended up back in the hospital for dehydration for 9 days after surgery till i took the patch off. once i took it off, the puking went away.

    Never again for me!!

  • I was on the 100mcg patches every 2 days for my chronic pain. I did have some side effects initially like nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, and dizzyness for a couple of weeks. What made a difference for me was that I put the patch on my belly instead of my chest. A pharmacist told me that Fentanyl works best where there is more fat, and after I put the patches on my belly, the side effects went away. I did fine for a long time on them, and was comfortable driving too. I never felt altered after my body got used to them. I did start at 25mcg and it took a year to get to 100mcg. Then I noticed that the patches weren't helping me anymore, and my doctor switched me to MS Contin.
  • Fentanyl is an excellent pain med, but there are a lot of other options available to you before jumping to such a strong pain med.
Oxycodone without the tylenol is an option, so are the morphine derived drugs, all in the middle as far as pain medication scales go.
Fentanyl is usually used when the other drugs like MS Contin, Oxcontin, Hydromorphone ( Opana) and others have been tried and failed to deliver adequate pain relief.
I would ask your doctor why he is jumping to fentanyl so soon when there are plenty of other meds to try first?
Also, fentanyl can be covered with tegaderm that you can purchase off ebay if necessary to cover them. I buy mine off there and save a lot of money that way.
  • Hi Tina; I started on the patch first at 12.5 mcg and then gradually up to 50 mcg, plus vicodin for break through pain. I think I have become opioid intolerant. I was having more side effects after being on it for over a year. Started with decreased breathing, becoming more and more 'out of it'. Plus I was still working FT. Recently I had 2 nightmares that I was dying and decided to go cold turkey off the patch.....not a good idea...... after a week of horrible withdrawls, I went to the Dr who gave me something to get me through it. I am however in a lot of pain now. I have had a 5 level cervical fusion, a 1 level spinal fusion and have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia now and I currently on medical leave. My short term memory is also shot. While I had the best control with the patch, the side effects for me were not worth it.... Like Sandi said, I'm surprised he is jumping to the patch so fast, I had tried Morphine first, that didn't work either. Need to find something that will help. The pain from the neck surgery is the worst.

Please do lots of research before you go this route, many people don't realize what is happening to them until it is to late.
