  • I took Lortabs before for breakthrough pain and you can break it in half with no problems so that you can swallow it easier. It won't change the dose you get at all. What mg's are you on?
  • 10 mg tabs

  • You mention chewing and swallowing, and you should really ask your doctor. As far as I'm aware, it's not a good idea to chew pills not labeld "chewable", but I may be wrong. I think you should try as Meydey suggests, and cut them in half.

    Wish you well!

  • Ewww - that's NASTY! But, unless it is a time-released tablet and labeled as "do not break or chew" then it should be ok. But, like everyone else has and will tell you - always check with your doctor. Or your pharmacist could give you a little direction on this as well.

Hope you find the solution you seek!
  • I find taking a sip of water first prepares you for the pill and instead of throwing your neck back pull your chin towards your chest when you swallow it may help. Applesauce may help it go down smoother also. Charry

  • Good advice there! I remember hearing that when we drink water from a fountain, our throat mechanics are different because of the position of our heads, therefore making swallowing pills easier. So, the chin to the chest sounds just about right!

PS - your avatar is COOL.
  • I've tried all different ways to get people to take oral meds. Just some Nursing tricks. Re: Avatar - My sister-in-law did this colour trick with photobucket or something similar. Charry

  • It should say with the medication if it is appropriate to chew or break them up, I took medication that was only intended to be released once swallowed whole and its outer metallic taste was to prevent absorption before then, some you can and some you should not.

    take care John
  • My doctor did say it's okay to crush vicodin (lortab is vicodin/hydrocodone apap) and take it with pudding or apple sauce because it's one pill that does break up immediately in your stomach anyway. Also, scored (indented line down the middle) pills and tablets are that way in case you want to cut them in half to take a half dose, and you'll notice that vicodin/lortab is a scored tablet. So you could make it easier to swallow by cutting it in half and swallowing the two halves consecutively instead of the whole oblong all at once.

But I am a stranger on the internet, and not a doctor or pharmacist. I believe you should always double check anything any of us say here with your own doctor or pharmacist, just to be safe.
  • Thanks to everyone for your replies.
First of all they don't taste bad at all nothing like the foul taste of Soma.
I don't really chew them all up just break it down with a few bites from my molars then a big drink of water. My Doc said it was OK (visited him yesterday).
Did try the break in half but the halves are still to big.
I'll try the throat position this next dose.
Again thanks to all of you.
