I saw my Dr today, and I am going to start taking gabapentin. He said for the night time dose that I should stack it. He said to take 3 pills 15 minutes apart. He was at a conference for fibro, and they said that stacking it makes it more effective. When I has the Rx filled, the pharmasist asked if I knew why he had written to take it that way and she had never heard/seen that before. Has anyone heard of that before? It just has me curious.

  • I take it but have never heard of anyone taking it like that. I take 2 in the morning and 1 in the evening.
  • I do that with other meds. I will take one now and then wait a half hour for the next. Always thought it was to give the stomach a chance to absorb them seperately.

  • I at times do that with my BT pain pills. In event 2 will handle the pain instead of the 3 I am allowed. But no I never heard of a Dr talking about stacking per say.

Good luck with your Gabapentin. I was hoping for a miracle in a bottle and instead it did not touch me and I got ALL the nasty side effects ........sigh

Thankfully after 3 tries of different meds., we hit bingo :)
L1 - S2 "gone" useless in 1 way or another. DDD. RA. Bone Spurs. Tons of nerve damage/issues. Stenosis. Both knees replaced. 50 yrs old. I had a great fall (hence my user name) at age 41 and it has been a domino effect every since.
  • I am hoping you have found a starting dogs that is working for you. I know it has only been a few days, maybe not enough time to know.
I have a physician who attends many conferences and I love that she has current information.
Keep us posted on your progress if you can.
  • When I saw the Dr he had said to take 3x100mg 3times a day. After I talked to people here who said that I shouldn't start out on that dose, I called the pharmasist (couldn't talk to the Dr he wasn't available). She told me to start with 2 pills at night, stacking like the Dr said, for the next 3-4 days, and then add 1 during the day and see how I feel. So right now I am just taking 2 at bedtime. Not making a difference yet, but I have a long ways to go until I am up to the prescibed dose so I am still very hopeful that it helps.

  • I started out at 100 x 3/day. It never bothered me, I don't get any of the bad side effects from it. Am up to 600x3/day now with I'd say about a 40% improvement maybe? Better than nothing! Hope it works for you!

  • From what i remember, stacking is a term that is occasionally used when someone is taking 2 kinds of pain meds for hard to control pain. For example, you can give one pain med and then 2 hours later or so depending on the med, you can give another one for breakthru. You need to know the peak times of the med. you are giving to do correctly.
Also it is said that one is stacking if you use one med to help u awaken and another to help you come down from the "high". More of a street term.
Next time you see him/her, ask why its ordered that way. I'd be interested to know the answer.
